The last letters in the site address (the extension) are usually .edu or .gov, for example, universityname.edu or agency.gov.
The use of both .gov and .edu domain names are regulated. According to the www.dotgov.gov website, the .gov "domain hosts only official, government sites at the federal-, state- and local-government levels". Only postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited by an agency on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies may obtain an internet name in the .edu domain.
